laborious day

August 30, 2008

I seem to be suffering from all kinds of withdrawal, the latest being from sleep.  I have this cold that won’t go away and I’ve been up since 1:30 a.m. after going to bed at 11:30 p.m.  So I’ve been doing dishes, laundry, answering Ben’s phone that hasn’t stopped ringing since he got home from work at 3:30 a.m.  I’ve also been cuddling with Lugnut, Crosby and Bear.  You’ve heard of Lugnut, but I recently began fostering dogs from our animal shelter because they’re so overcrowded.  Crosby has a bad case of heartworms so he was next on the list to be put down … he’s just too sweet for that to happen.  Then they called me about Bear yesterday.  Apparently he was irritating his owner to the point the owner thought it necessary to beat him with a 2×4.  Yeah, relocate to Harrison!  I’ve made friends with the too-nice-for-her-own-good shelter director and she says that Harrison is like a third world country when it comes to animal treatment.  And she’s worked in many shelters across the states.  She told me last night that people here would rather shoot or drown their dogs than get them spayed/neutered.  This is just not the kind of thing you want to hear about your beloved hometown.  Maybe I just need a cause.  Or a nap.
